Federal drug case has ties to Arkansas

Facing drug charges could be a serious matter. Whether it is a minor offense involving just the accused or a major offense involving many parties, it is important to understand the matter at hand and what criminal defense options are available.

Based on recent reports, federal authorities arrested several people affiliated with a trucking company operating out of a state that borders Arkansas. The trucking firm was contracted with FedEx to help the parcel delivery company ship packages across the country. According to authorities, the firm’s management was using their transportation fleet to ship marijuana and cocaine to states across the country, including Arkansas. Federal officials arrested their suspects on charges related to drug trafficking and money laundering, and the group now faces at least a decade in federal prison.

By reviewing FedEx accounts, authorities say that they have identified several recipients of the marijuana and cocaine. The federal government says that the trucking company would ship the drugs to these or other parties, and they would then send payment, in the form of cash, back to the managers of the trucking firm. When executing search warrants in connection with their investigation, authorities say they found $150,000 cash as well as several high-powered firearms.

This case is of interest because it shows the frequent intersection between white collar crimes and drug crimes related to trafficking. Federal officials will frequently investigate businesses that they believe are being used as a front to carry on drug-related operation. They will use the power of the federal justice system to crack down on the owners of these businesses, threatening them with severe prison sentences and hefty fines.

Those Arkansas residents who find themselves accused of being connected to the drug trade could face serious consequences. This includes the possibility of years in prison and the loss of any property that the government suspects was involved with drug trafficking. Those accused should evaluate their options carefully with the help of experienced legal counsel.
