He began his legal career as a prosecutor in Pulaski and Lonoke Counties, where he tried hundreds of cases, including an especially heavy DWI docket that put him in trial week after week. He earned his J.D. from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law and is licensed to practice in Arkansas.
