3 things your criminal defense lawyer will help you with

There’s little doubt that you’re going to be nervous if you have a criminal drug trial ahead of you. If the trial ends in a conviction, you’ll have to face some very serious consequences. But what if it doesn’t end in a conviction? What if you’re able to defend yourself successfully with a skilled criminal defense attorney by your side?

Many defendants accused of drug crimes don’t understand the benefits of having legal representation from a lawyer versus from trying to “go it” on your own. In fact, there are many such benefits and here are three of them:

Your defense attorney can help you negotiate a deal: He or she might speak with the defense attorneys to figure out a workable plea bargain arrangement. This can be particularly helpful if it looks like a conviction is likely. A plea deal is a way for the defendant to secure reduced punishments.

Make formal requests for lighter punishments: Imagine the court arrests you and charges you with drug possession, then finds you guilty. A skilled defense attorney might try to prevent you from needing to serve the severest punishments available. This can often be achieved through suggestions or presentations to the court during sentencing, but without legal advocacy, leniency may not be likely.

Give you a reality check: One of the most important uses of your lawyer involves keeping you calm. Your lawyer may need to explain to you the very complicated legal documents. This can help diffuse anxiety when you see plausible defense options that may be viable in your case.

Your lawyer should also try to help you understand the potential benefits and downsides of different legal decisions. He or she will help you get to where you need to be in terms of your legal defense.

If you’re facing a drug crime allegation, start studying the issue more thoroughly under Arkansas law. You may find that you were overlooking something important that could help your defense. The more you know about drug crime defense law, the better you’ll be able to defend yourself. If successful in your defense, you may be able to get your charges dropped or reduce you punishments significantly. Do not take risks when so much of your future and quality of life hangs in the balance.
